CHOICE Review

Political theory, ideologies, institutions, processes, and policies are presented in 84 articles grouped under ten broad headings. Contributors include many distinguished academics. A lengthy introductory essay by the senior editor reviews the epistemological and philosophical evolution of political science, and concludes by defining the encyclopedia's orientation as "post-empiricist" and "post-modernist." On that basis, contributors were asked to provide "a concise critical analysis, rather than a descriptive capsule sketch. . .to address methodological as well as substantive issues. . .engaging relevant debates concerning alternative research strategies and differentiating fruitful from flawed approaches." Most of the articles conform generally to that pattern. In addition to copious citations to the research literature there are brief bibliographies listing major works "for further reading" at the conclusion of each article. This up-to-date and well-executed work provides a sound introduction to all aspects of political study. Upper-division and graduate level. T. Freides; SUNY College at Purchase
